What Can I Do About My Benefits as a New Hire?

New hires may:

  • ENROLL. For eligible employees, you will be able to enroll into Medical, Dental, Flexible Spending Accounts, and Pre-tax Accounts.
  • CANCEL. If you decide to cancel your initial enrollment, you may do so at any time. Please keep in mind that if you do cancel certain benefits such as medical, dental, and flexible spending accounts, you will not be able to re-enroll until our Annual Open Enrollment period unless you experience a Qualifying Life Event.

  • CHANGE TO INITIAL ENROLLMENT. If you need to request a change to your initial enrollment that was made in EHS, please contact the RCUH Employee Benefits section no later than the 20th of the month after your start date.

    For example, if you start on May 5th, you have up until May 20th to contact us if you are requesting a change. If you start on May 20th, you must notify RCUH Employee Benefits of your change no later than your first day. If you start on May 21st, you have until June 20th to notify us that you are requesting a change.

    All requests for changes are subject to RCUH HR’s review and approval, and all approved changes will be made prospectively. Please note once a deduction has been collected, you may no longer make changes to your health plan until the next annual Open Enrollment period, unless you experience a Qualifying Life Event.

PROVIDER INFORMATION

Choosing a medical plan can be complicated. Understanding the difference between an HMO (Health Maintenance Organization) Plan and a PPO (Preferred Provider Organization) may help you decide the best plan for you and your family. PPO plans allows you more flexibility in choosing which healthcare provider you see. HMO plans HMO (Health Maintenance Organization) plans are a network of healthcare providers that coordinate care for you. It generally will not cover out-of-network care, except in some cases of an emergency. You medical premiums will vary according to the plan and number of dependents you select.

RCUH has only one dental plan – Hawaii Dental Service (HDS).

National Benefit Services logoLearn about how you can save money on pre-taxed dollars on Flexible Spending Accounts for Healthcare or Dependent Care, and Pre-Tax Transportation Benefits Plan for Parking or Transit. FSAs could be one of the simplest solutions in saving money on everyday items you may already be purchasing.

Group Life Insurance
Offers eligible employees' beneficiary/beneficiaries important financial protection in the event an employee suffers death.

Group Long-Term Disability
Provides partial income to assist employees who are "disabled" for 90 days or more because of an illness or injury. Under the Long-Term Disability, employees also have access to the Employee Assistance Program (EAP) via the MetLife LifeWorks Program. Services include support with mental, Financial, physicial, and emotional well-being. See the EAP Flyer on how to access 24/7 support and resources.

Provides eligible employees and their families with assistance in meeting the financial impact of an extended illness, injury, or advancing age of the employee (i.e., professional home care services, assisted living facility, etc.). Eligible employees are enrolled automatically into the Long-Term Care Insurance base benefit.

Supplemental Long-Term Care Insurance coverage is available for employees and eligible family members. An employee may purchase supplemental coverage above the base coverage within 30 days of the employee’s date of hire, or during the annual Open Enrollment period. There may be medical underwriting as determined by the insurance company.
