Benefits Spotlight – Healthcare Options

RCUH offers four PPO Plan Types and two HMO Plan Types. When searching for health coverage and comparing plans, be sure the plan you choose meets your family’s needs and fits within your budget. Familiarize yourself with the differences between a Preferred Provider Organization (PPO) and Health Maintenance Organization (HMO). Do you and your family only need preventative care, or do you need special services or prescriptions? Do you want more flexibility or do you like having centrally coordinated care through your Primary Care Physician (PCP)? If you and your family are travelling this year, do you know what type of coverage your plan offers? Everybody’s situation is unique and different, so be sure to do your research and analyze your situation every year to ensure you select the right coverage for your needs.

RCUH’s Medical Coverage Providers

Please note RCUH’s HMO Plans’ in-network coverages are limited to Hawaii locations. RCUH does not have a high deductible health plan (HDHP).

Hawaii Medical Service Association (HMSA)
HMSA has 3 PPO Plan Types (Comprehensive Medical Basic, Comprehensive Medical, and Preferred Provider) and 1 HMO Plan Type. (Please note Comprehensive Medical Basic is not mentioned in HMSA’s YouTube video linked below as it is unique to RCUH, but does fall under the PPO Plan Type.)

Kaiser Permanente

Kaiser Permanente has 2 HMO Plans (HMO Standard and HMO Comprehensive). At Kaiser Permanente, your doctor, specialists, and pharmacists have access to your entire medical history through your electronic health record — so you never have to repeat your story. Your doctor acts as your health advocate and coordinates your care, which means you don’t have to deal with claims or paperwork.
