RCUH Training: Employee/Independent Contractor (EIC) Review – Feb 10: Hilo and Feb 22: UH Manoa ** New Date Added!

**Due to high demand, registration for the February 8th and February 16th sessions at UH Manoa are CLOSED

Upcoming EIC Training Dates:

Friday, February 10 – UH Hilo
10:30am – 12:00pm
UH Hilo, `Imiloa Conference Room

Wednesday, February 22 – UH Manoa **NEW DATE ADDED!
1:00pm – 2:30pm
UH Manoa, Burns Hall 4012

This training session will be held to provide Principal Investigators and Project Administrators with a set of guidelines on EIC Determinations. It is the policy of the RCUH to properly classify individuals providing services as an “Employee,” “Independent Contractor,” or “Non-Employee.” Misclassification of employees as independent contractors is a serious issue and could result in being held liable for employment taxes (income tax withholdings, Social Security and Medicare, unemployment) for that worker in addition to penalties and interest. Organizations are being scrutinized as never before, as federal and state agencies are ramping up enforcement efforts.

Please sign up for a training through Employee Self Service (ESS) and search “Hawaii” or “Oahu” (case-sensitive) under “Select Training Island”. If you have any trouble signing up or are interested in scheduling a session outside of UH Manoa, please feel free contact Tana Staub at [email protected] or 956-7055. This is the first session of several that we will be holding this year and we are happy to schedule on neighbor islands and other campuses if there is any interest.

Agenda:

  • RCUH Employee/Independent Contractor Determination Process
  • Independent Contractor, Guest Speaker, and Employee relationships (How to’s)
  • EIC Policy and Updated Memo Templates
  • Master EIC Determinations

RCUH Policy:

3.225 RCUH Employee-Independent Contractor Review

Please contact Tana Staub at [email protected] or 956-7055 at least 5 business days prior to training if you require special arrangements or accommodations.

TIAA-CREF Individual Retirement Counseling Sessions

ATTENTION:  Regular status employees 50-100% FTE

If you are currently participating in RCUH’s Group Retirement Annuity (GRA) and/or Supplemental Retirement Annuity (SRA) plans administered through TIAA-CREF OR if you are interested in enrolling into a TIAA-CREF SRA plan, the RCUH Human Resources Department is now coordinating one-hour Individual/Employee Retirement Counseling Sessions with TIAA-CREF.  During these meetings, you will be able to discuss your personal financial/retirement goals with a TIAA-CREF Financial Consultant, on a free and confidential basis.

A TIAA-CREF representative will be able to assist you with planning for your retirement goals, including:

  • Setting realistic goals for key life events and retirement
  • Reviewing your investment mix and strategy
  • Selecting your TIAA-CREF options
  • Learning about TIAA-CREF retirement income flexibility

For employees unfamiliar with the SRA plan, it is considered a 403(b) tax-deferred annuity plan which allows an employee to make contributions via payroll deduction from his/her pre-tax earnings towards an individual retirement plan (i.e., SRA) through our third party administrator, TIAA-CREF.  Enrolling or making changes to your SRA election may be done at any time during the year. For more information about the GRA and SRA plans, please go to our website, www.rcuh.com and review the RCUH Retirement Plans Policy (3.560).

Feb 8: Workplace Violence Prevention Training Sessions (Oahu)

RCUH will be conducting two Workplace Violence Prevention Training sessions at UH Manoa on Wednesday, February 8th. It is strongly recommended that all RCUH staff and supervisors attend this training. These will be 3-hour sessions facilitated by Jerry Trinidad of Action Strategies. Everyone (including Principal Investigators, non-RCUH employees, and supervisors who employ individuals through the RCUH) is welcome to attend. Priority for seating will be given to RCUH employees and supervisors of RCUH employees.

It is the RCUH’s policy to provide a safe work environment for all employees and individuals in the workplace. We maintain a zero tolerance for violence in the workplace. Violators of this policy may be subject to immediate disciplinary action, including possible termination of employment.

The first hour (all employees + supervisors) will focus on creating and maintaining a violence-free workplace and will cover:

  • Definition and types of workplace violence
  • Where and reasons why violence occurs
  • Profiles of the victims and perpetrators
  • Warning signs of potential violence and steps to mitigate it

After the first hour, the session will break and non-supervisory employees may be excused. The second two hours (supervisors) will focus on communication skills and conflict resolution.

Please sign up for a training through Employee Self Service (ESS) and search “Oahu” (case-sensitive) under “Select Training Island”. If you have any trouble signing up, please feel free to contact Tana Staub at [email protected] or 956-7055.  We will definitely be scheduling future sessions in Maui, Kauai, and Hawaii island in the next several months.
